Architecture space should be 
able to regenerate itself,
as people is the most dynamic 
thing in architecture.

Architecture is designed for a specific type of users, in our case is for an institution. People changes and therefore institution is also ever changing. From the day that the faculty was founded, the programs a curriculum has been changing many times. However, as the new vision is expanding, the building is not.

Our faculty building is not designed to keep up with the ever changing notion of the institution. As can be seen through the method of renovation in which it fix the problem superficially but not at its root. Therefore, the renovation process is tedious and never ending, every year there is something to fix and the problem keep on arising due to the fact that the building cannot keep up with the demand, it requires.

While the new space for education need to be able to reconstitute itself. With the flexibility at its core, the space will be capable of reconstruction itself physically in relation to the needs of the institution and its users.

Part 1: Brief & Location

For architecture historian Mark Jarzombek architecture is “a failed discipline“as it count not keep pace with the contemporary philosophical discourse at the key moment in history. He suggest that instead of lamenting what he identifies as disciplinary failure, we should actively celebrate it, incorporate the disciplinary failure into our theoretical frameworks and engage it in architecture practice.

A school of architecture is a special type of building and, perhaps one of the most challenging spaces to design. It must simultaneously accommodate a large variety if functional demands, serve as a didactic model for both students and professors, foster trans-disciplinary collaboration, enable dynamic capacities of expansion and academic flux, and engage social, cultural, and historical narratives.

The project challenges ones to design a new school of architecture for Faculty of architecture, Chulalongkorn University. It is one of the oldest schools of architecture in Thailand. With its first students began their studies in the early 1930. The school of architecture as a physical space, completed in 1940, now accommodates both undergraduate and master degree in Architecture, Urban design, Landscape, Interior and International program in Architectural design.

Not only must the school, serves as a physical artifact, encapsulate these diverse programs of inquiry and modes of working but should also serve as a didactic model or pedagogical tool for these diverse practices.

Part 2: The Contract

The project was launched in 2012 by the Dean of faculty of architecture school, Chulalongkorn University, in an attempt to reconsider education system. Where there would normally be controlled with the top-down management that the system has been corrupted with political issue, grading system and internal matters. The contract was signed and the evaluation of the architecture school has begun.

The Contract stated that.. “Every four year, when a full cycle of academic year has completed every program and space of the Faculty of architecture, Chulalongkorn University, will be reconstituted based on a voting system. The architectural students, teachers, and staffs of Chulalongkorn University will have the rights to vote for the future of the school. 

Each one will have an equivalent of one vote. Each student will be given a ballet form in which a wide range of programs and spaces will be provided for the students to choose. Each person will only be able to vote for shared spaces that they would like them to be renovated, added, or shirked. 

The contract aim is to solve the situations of tedious renovation that never meet the demands of the users. By proposing a flexible system of designing architectural space, the space will be adaptable and responsive to the needs of current users.

Part 3: Voting Day

During the voting day, each eligible member of the faculty will have one vote, and each equal to a point. After the voting is finished, there will be a list of the programs announced to be removed, renovated, or contracted. Those programs will be gradually constructed with in the 4 years period.

On the other hand, any spaces which owned by a specific department, for example International programs in architecture and design, interior, urban, Thai architecture etc would take a turn to renovate in a cycle of one year. The programs that are under construction would be placed in a transit space provided in the 3 court yards of the faculty.

Part 4: Deconstruction Process

A CASE STUDY OF ISE GRAND SHRINE

The shrine has a traditional method of continual rebuild every 20 years. It has continued for 1300 years. It was last rebuilt in 1993.The next rebuilding  was finished in 2013.

For every 20 years, the shires are going to be rebuilt; it is part of the Shinto’s belief of death, renewal of nature and the impermanent of all things. People in the city will gathering and participate in this sacred event. Through the process of deconstruction and construction, the didactic quality of both construction technique and the belief have been passing on generations by generations.

The rebuilt process will occur beside the existing one,every detail of construction is going to be exactly the same design and crafting methods.As the new construction completed, the old building will demolish. This is the spiritual process of reconstitute the building, it is the rebirth of freshness and purity.
